Your child’s first dental visit: what to expect

Bring your child along when their first teeth come through, and no later than their first birthday. NHS dental care is free for children, and an early visit is mostly about getting used to us.
A first visit is short. Your child can sit on your lap, we count their teeth, have a look at their gums and may paint on a fluoride varnish to help protect them. We will also chat with you about brushing, drinks and snacks.
Keep the language positive at home: talk about the dentist counting teeth rather than anything hurting. If you are nervous yourself, that is fine. Tell us, and we will make sure the visit goes at your child’s pace.
